EV Battery Warranty in Nepal 2026: BYD, Tata and MG

Ratings NepalOctober 16, 202611 min read

Compare EV battery warranty terms in Nepal for Tata, MG and BYD. Understand exclusions, battery health, charging, service and authorised dealers.

An electric car may look affordable when you compare fuel savings with petrol. But what happens if the battery loses capacity, the charging system develops a fault or a part needs replacing after several years? A long warranty headline is helpful only when you understand what is covered, for how long and under which conditions.

Quick answer: Before buying an EV in Nepal, ask the authorised distributor for the Nepal-specific warranty booklet for your exact model, variant, VIN and purchase date. Check the battery, motor and whole-vehicle warranties separately. Also verify charging compatibility, service access, spare parts, battery-health terms and warranty transfer rules. Never assume a promotion reported last year still applies today.

EV warranty terms explained simply

TermWhat it meansWhat to ask
Battery warrantyCoverage for specified battery defects or conditionsCapacity threshold, years, kilometres and exclusions
Motor warrantyCoverage for the traction motor under stated termsDoes it include inverter or other components?
Vehicle warrantyCoverage for specified vehicle componentsWhich parts are excluded?
High-voltage component warrantyCover for particular electrical componentsExact list of covered parts
Service requirementMaintenance conditions for warranty validitySchedule, authorised workshops and records
TransferabilityWhether coverage follows the car after resaleIs a second owner covered?
Battery health / SOHEstimate of remaining usable battery capacityWhat test and threshold does the warranty use?

Years or kilometres, whichever comes first means the coverage can end when either limit is reached. A warranty also does not mean every repair is free: exclusions, consumables, accidental damage and other conditions may apply.

What official Nepal model pages currently show

This is a document comparison, not a ranking of EV reliability. Warranty information can differ by model, registration date, promotion and contract.

Why we do not give one “BYD warranty 2026” number: Public reports describe extended BYD battery and motor coverage announced in 2025, including a limited-time New Year campaign. That historical promotion is not proof of the exact terms offered to every buyer in October 2026. Request the current written policy from Cimex.

Why we do not claim one MG warranty for every vehicle: MG's current official warranty page includes model and registration-date qualifications. Public reporting also described an extended MG offer in 2026. The safest approach is to obtain the specific offer terms in writing and compare them with the vehicle's standard warranty booklet. Do not combine figures from different campaigns.

How to verify an authorised EV dealer in Nepal

Buying from an authorised channel can matter for warranty claims, service records and genuine parts. But an attractive showroom or a social-media page is not enough to establish authorisation.

  1. Start from the brand or official Nepal distributor website.
  2. Find the current dealer or showroom list, if published.
  3. Call the distributor's listed number to confirm the seller's authorisation.
  4. Ask which legal entity will issue the tax invoice and warranty documents.
  5. Match the car's VIN and variant to the invoice, booking form and warranty record.
  6. Confirm who will honour the warranty if the dealer closes or changes ownership.
  7. Check where the nearest authorised service centre is located.

Examples of official distributor starting points include Cimex for BYD, Tata Motors Nepal and MG Motor Nepal. Discover EV-related businesses through the Ratings Nepal EV CAR category, but remember that a directory listing is not proof of distributor authorisation.

Battery health is not the same as driving range

Battery state of health (SOH) estimates how much usable capacity remains compared with a reference condition. State of charge (SOC) is how full the battery is right now. They are different.

An EV showing 80% charge does not mean its battery health is 80%. Range can change because of traffic, speed, road gradient, temperature, air conditioning, load, tyres and driving habits. A warranty may define a battery-capacity threshold and a specific test method. Ask the distributor to show you those clauses.

Questions to ask about battery replacement

  • What failure or capacity-loss threshold qualifies for a claim?
  • Who performs the official battery-health test?
  • Is the remedy repair, module replacement, pack replacement or another action?
  • Are diagnostic charges covered if the claim is rejected?
  • Is the replacement part new, refurbished or equivalent under the policy?
  • Are damage from water, impact, misuse or unauthorised modification excluded?
  • Does the warranty transfer to the second owner?

Get the answers in writing. A salesperson's verbal promise is difficult to verify years later.

How to compare EV range honestly

Official certified range figures are measured under defined test cycles. They are useful for comparing models tested under the same method, but they are not a guaranteed distance on every Nepali route.

For example, the Tata Tiago.ev Nepal specifications publish a 291 km certified range under the stated MIDC test and a separate 205 km C75 estimated real-world figure. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent results from a Kathmandu-to-Pokhara drive. The same page lists a 24 kWh battery for the Tiago.ev LR variant.

When planning a hill journey, leave a safety margin. Ask owners who drive the same variant on similar routes about typical consumption, and test the car with your usual passengers and luggage where possible.

Charging compatibility in Nepal

Do not assume every charging point fits every car. Check the connector standard, supported AC charging rate, DC fast-charging capability and software or payment requirements.

Tata's Nepal Tiago.ev and Curvv.ev specification pages list CCS2 charging compatibility. That does not prove that every public charger is available, working or compatible at the time you arrive.

The Nepal Electricity Authority links to its charging-station app. The official NEA Charge app listing describes charger booking and payment features. Check the current network and station status before a trip, and have a backup charging location.

Home charging checklist

  1. Ask the distributor for the correct charger and installation requirements.
  2. Have a qualified electrician assess wiring, earthing and circuit protection.
  3. Confirm where the car will be parked and whether the charging cable reaches safely.
  4. Ask about charger warranty and responsibility for installation faults.
  5. Keep a record of the installation and electrical work.
  6. Confirm whether your housing society or landlord permits the setup.

Never improvise high-power charging with unsuitable extension cords or unsafe sockets.

A simple way to estimate EV electricity cost

Electricity cost depends on consumption and the tariff actually charged. Use this formula:

Cost per 100 km = energy used in kWh per 100 km × price per kWh.

Illustrative example, not a quoted NEA tariff: If your car uses 16 kWh per 100 km and your effective charging price is NPR 12 per kWh, the electricity cost is NPR 192 per 100 km, before charging losses, parking fees, subscriptions and other costs. Your real cost will vary.

Compare that with petrol using the same distance, your car's actual fuel consumption and the current pump price. Also consider financing, insurance, annual taxes, tyres, servicing, depreciation and possible repairs. Electricity cost alone is not total ownership cost.

EV service and spare parts: What to check before paying

A warranty is only as useful as the practical service pathway. Ask where your car can be diagnosed, whether technicians are trained for high-voltage systems, how long parts may take to arrive and what happens if the car cannot be driven. Ask whether towing or roadside assistance is included, limited or excluded.

If the vehicle has an accident, find out whether repairs outside the authorised network affect coverage. Keep a full service history and invoices. If you travel outside Kathmandu often, check service access in your usual destinations rather than relying only on a showroom in the capital.

Used EV buying checklist in Nepal

A used EV may be good value, but its battery condition and documentation matter. Before purchasing:

  1. Match the VIN, registration and ownership records.
  2. Obtain the service history and evidence of authorised repairs.
  3. Request a battery-health report from an appropriate technician or authorised service centre.
  4. Check the warranty's remaining time, kilometres and transferability.
  5. Inspect charging ports, cables, tyres, suspension and accident repairs.
  6. Confirm there are no unresolved finance or ownership issues.
  7. Test both AC and, where safe and available, compatible DC charging.
  8. Get the current owner to disclose flood, collision and major repair history.

A battery-health percentage should be interpreted using the test method, software and temperature conditions. Avoid buying solely on a screenshot of the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Which EV has the best battery warranty in Nepal in 2026?

There is no single answer without checking the model, variant, purchase date and current promotion. Compare the signed warranty documents, not marketing headlines.

Does an eight-year EV warranty mean the whole car is covered for eight years?

No. Battery, motor, high-voltage components and the rest of the vehicle can have different coverage periods and exclusions.

Does BYD offer a ten-year warranty in Nepal?

Public announcements described extended BYD coverage in 2025, but the applicability to a new purchase in October 2026 must be confirmed in the current written warranty from Cimex.

What does “whichever comes first” mean?

Coverage ends when either the time limit or kilometre limit is reached, subject to the contract. For example, an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty can expire after reaching 160,000 km even if fewer than eight years have passed.

Is a claimed 400 km range guaranteed on Nepali roads?

No. Certified test-cycle range and real-world driving distance are different. Hills, speed, temperature, traffic and vehicle load affect consumption.

Can I charge any EV at an NEA charger?

Not necessarily. Check the vehicle's connector, charging standard, station status and payment system. Plan an alternative charging stop.

Can a used EV keep the remaining battery warranty?

Only if the warranty terms allow transfer and the vehicle meets the conditions. Ask the distributor to verify the VIN and remaining coverage before purchase.

Does insurance cover battery damage?

It depends on the specific motor insurance policy, event and exclusions. A manufacturer warranty and an insurance policy protect against different types of risk. Read both documents.

Final thoughts

A good EV purchase decision combines the actual written warranty, a suitable car for your driving routes, safe charging, reliable service access and a realistic ownership budget. Compare several models, inspect the documentation and avoid buying because of an old promotional headline.
