IST Secondary School is the higher secondary section of the International School of Tourism and Hotel Management (IST), a hospitality-focused institution in Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu, opposite the German Embassy. It teaches Grades 11 and 12 under Nepal's National Examinations Board (NEB), running a +2 Management programme adapted for students who want careers in hotels, travel and tourism. The school takes students straight after SEE who already have their sights on the hospitality industry.
History and background
The parent institute is older than its +2 section. A 2020 message from IST's chief executive marks the organisation's sixteenth year, which dates its start to around 2004. The +2 wing, IST Secondary School, was set up in 2009, according to Edusanjal. Its stated purpose was to train people for Nepal's growing hospitality industry.
IST also teaches at bachelor level. It offers a three-year FHS diploma in Hotel Management and another in Tourism Management, each worth 120 credit hours, in affiliation with Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in Austria. A student can therefore move from IST's +2 into an internationally affiliated hospitality degree at the same address.
Edusanjal lists Samjhana Basnyat as principal of the secondary school. IST says it combines faculty with senior professionals from the hospitality industry, and treats a structured internship as a core part of the course.
Programmes offered
- +2 Management (NEB), with an optional Hotel Management specialisation

Practical training facilities
Because the school specialises in hospitality, its campus includes working training spaces that ordinary +2 schools do not have:
- Demo restaurant and training bar
- Fully equipped practical kitchen
- Training reception desk
- Mock-up guest rooms
- Classrooms with a property-management-system (PMS) lab
- Computer lab with internet access
- Resource library
- Multipurpose and conference halls
- Indoor and outdoor games
- School transport
Industry links
IST's teaching combines management theory with hands-on service training. According to Edusanjal, students do internships at three- and four-star hotels. Those placements, together with the Salzburg-affiliated bachelor route, set IST apart from general +2 schools that offer hotel management as just one elective among many.
