Gandaki Boarding School (GBS) is a non-profit, co-educational residential school at Lamachaur, Pokhara Metropolitan City-16, about 200 km west of Kathmandu. It opened in 1966, and the Government of Nepal designates it a National School. GBS teaches students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, roughly ages 9 to 19, and its admissions are selective.

History

The school was founded on 11 June 1966 under the name Nepal Adarsha Bidyashram. It was a joint effort by the United Mission to Nepal, Shining Hospital in Pokhara and the local community, and it later became known as Gandaki Boarding School.

In 1985 GBS switched to English as its language of instruction and became co-educational. In 1991 it added a 10+2 Science programme under the then Higher Secondary Education Board, so students could finish their school education on the same campus. According to Wikipedia, the school also offered Cambridge GCE A Levels from 2010, but that programme has since been discontinued.

In 2072 BS (2015) the Ministry of Education named GBS, then listed as Gandaki Aawasiya Higher Secondary Boarding School, the best private school in the former Western Development Region. The school recently marked its 60th Foundation Day. Its current principal, Dr. Bishwo Udhir Poudel Gharti, is the school's fourteenth principal and the first former student to hold the post. Wikipedia lists enrolment at about 1,150 students on a campus of roughly 35 acres.

Programmes

  • Grades 4–10 under the national curriculum, leading to the SEE
  • +2 Science (NEB), Grades 11–12
  • BE Software Engineering, at Gandaki College of Engineering and Sciences (Pokhara University)
  • BE Computer Engineering, at Gandaki College of Engineering and Sciences (Pokhara University)

Boarding life

Students live on campus in the school's hostels, and student testimonials on the school's website describe spending seven years at GBS. Scholarships are available. The school's motto, "Knowledge, Character and Service", reflects its aim of combining academic study with character building and service.

Alumni

Wikipedia lists former students in music, politics, film, economics and the arts. They include the musician Amrit Gurung, the politician Kiran Gurung and the actress Nisha Adhikari.
