Nepal Remittance Comparison: IME, eSewa, Prabhu, City

Ratings Nepal Editorial TeamOctober 29, 20266 min read

Families receiving money from abroad often compare remittance brands by familiarity alone. A better decision checks the sending country, exchange rate, transfer fee, payout channel, receiver's identification requirements and support if a transfer is delayed. This guide compares four real Nepal-facing services without declaring an unsupported nationwide winner.

Research checked 29 October 2026. Provider features are based on their published services and an NRB licensing reference. Transfer availability, fees and rates change by sending country and partner; always compare a live quote.

This table records published receiving methods, not an assertion that all methods work in every country or transaction. The four services are examples, not a complete list of Nepal's licensed remittance companies.

How this comparison was researched

We checked the Nepal Rastra Bank's published foreign-exchange license list dated 14 January 2026, alongside provider service pages. NRB lists non-bank remittance entities, but licence status and expiry dates should be rechecked on the latest official register before a transaction. We evaluated service availability and verification steps, not hypothetical transaction speed or unverified customer satisfaction scores.

IME Remit

IME Remit describes cash pickup, bank-account receipt and receipt through Khalti by IME. Its site also offers remittance tracking. The key decision is whether a partner in the sender's country can deliver the desired payout type at a competitive final exchange rate.

Ratings Nepal also has an IME Limited business listing. Treat a directory listing as a starting point; verify payment instructions through the actual licensed provider.

eSewa Money Transfer

eSewa Money Transfer describes eSewa wallet deposits, bank transfers and cash pickup. Its cash-pickup guidance says recipients should check the reference number, exact beneficiary name and valid government identification. A verified wallet can be convenient, but the sender still needs to select a supported remittance partner and delivery method.

See the eSewa Money Transfer listing for local business information.

Prabhu Money Transfer

Prabhu Money Transfer describes cash pickup and direct account deposit. Its guidance says cash recipients use a control number and valid identification. Compare agent access in the beneficiary's district and the total amount received after any sending-side fees or currency conversion.

Ratings Nepal lists Prabhu Money Transfer.

City Express Money Transfer

City Express describes cash pickup, bank deposit and its City Pay App. It also publishes transaction-support and tracking information. Confirm the current sending partner and beneficiary payout method before initiating a transfer.

Which remittance option should you choose?

For a recipient without a bank account: Compare authorised cash pickup locations near their home, identification requirements, opening hours and the sender's total cost.

For a recipient with a bank account: Ask the sender for a quote to the correct bank and account name. A bank deposit can remove a cash-pickup trip, but the final exchange rate and settlement timing still matter.

For a recipient using a verified wallet: Confirm the wallet is supported for that specific international transfer and that the registered mobile number and account details match. A domestic wallet transfer is not necessarily the same as a licensed cross-border remittance.

For urgent transfers: Check the actual provider's live estimate, compliance cutoffs, holidays and support contact. Do not trust an agent's unsupported promise of an exact arrival time.

How to compare the real cost

Ask each provider or sending partner to quote the same sending amount at the same time. Record:

  1. Sending amount and currency.
  2. Transfer fee charged to the sender.
  3. Exchange rate actually applied.
  4. Exact NPR amount expected by the beneficiary.
  5. Payout type and any applicable limits.
  6. Cancellation, refund and complaint process.

A low visible fee can be offset by a weaker exchange rate. Conversely, a provider with a fee may deliver more rupees overall. Do not compare marketing slogans or old screenshots.

Safe receiving checklist

  • Confirm the sender used an authorised provider or partner.
  • Check the beneficiary's legal name against their ID or verified bank/wallet record.
  • Keep the control/reference number private except when needed by the authorised receiver and agent.
  • Never disclose OTPs, account passwords or wallet PINs to a caller.
  • Verify any 'release fee' demand with the provider's official customer support.
  • Retain the receipt and transaction reference until the funds arrive.

If a transfer to a bank account fails, our bank transfer refund and complaint guide explains how to document the problem and escalate appropriately.

Frequently asked questions

Which remittance service is cheapest for Nepal?

There is no universal cheapest service. The result depends on sender country, payment method, exchange rate, transfer size and payout channel. Compare live recipient amounts.

Can a family member receive cash without a bank account?

Yes, where the selected provider and corridor support cash pickup. The recipient generally needs valid identification and the correct transaction reference.

Are IME and eSewa the same service?

No. They are distinct remittance brands with different product and wallet relationships. Check the sender's selected provider and partner rather than assuming their services are interchangeable.

Should I trust a company simply because it appears on a directory?

No. Check the latest NRB licensing information and the provider's official website. Directory entries and consumer reviews are additional context, not regulatory authorisation.
