Fiber vs 4G Internet in Nepal: Which Fits Your Home?

Ratings Nepal TeamNovember 2, 20264 min read

Quick answer: Choose fiber broadband when a fixed connection is available at your address and several people need regular internet. Consider 4G mobile data or a 4G router when you need portability, a temporary connection or a backup. Test signal quality at the exact location before committing.

This is a technology comparison, not a ranking of individual internet companies. Availability, speed, fair-use terms, equipment and prices vary by provider and address. Information reviewed on 2 November 2026.

What official providers actually confirm

Nepal Telecom's FTTH information lists broadband internet, voice and television options. It advises customers to check availability with the nearest office, and provides a complaint registration route via 198, option 1.

Nepal Telecom's 4G information says its 4G coverage spans all 77 districts, but that does not mean every home has the same signal strength. It also advises checking SIM compatibility through *\444#**.

Ncell's coverage update describes local 4G improvements. These are provider statements, not independent speed tests at your address.

Compare the total cost, not just the headline monthly price

Ask each provider for a written quotation covering connection, router or optical terminal, security deposit if any, tax, renewal period, fair-use policy, cancellation terms and repair visits. A low advertised monthly price may exclude equipment or one-time fees. Avoid using an old screenshot as evidence of a current offer.

If your family attends online classes, makes video calls and streams simultaneously, ask about upload performance, evening congestion and outage response, not only advertised download Mbps.

Five checks before paying

  1. Confirm service availability for your exact ward, street and building.
  2. Request the current tariff sheet and all one-time costs.
  3. Test mobile signal inside the room where a 4G router would sit.
  4. Ask how outages are reported, and whether support provides a ticket number.
  5. Keep the receipt, service agreement and installation details.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4G always slower than fiber?

No. Real performance depends on network capacity, signal, local congestion, equipment and the specific fiber plan. Compare measured performance where you will actually use the connection.

Does nationwide coverage guarantee indoor service?

No. A district-level coverage statement does not establish signal quality inside a particular building.

Can I use 4G as a backup for fiber?

Often yes, with a compatible device and suitable data package. Check your router's failover capability and your operator's terms.
