CCTV Installation in Nepal: Privacy and Buying Checklist

Ratings Nepal Editorial TeamNovember 2, 20266 min read

Quick answer: Before hiring a CCTV installer in Nepal, ask for a site survey, an itemised written quotation, a clear camera-placement plan, storage and backup details, privacy safeguards, administrator-password handover, warranty terms and a demonstration of the working system. Do not choose solely by the number of cameras or a low advertised package price.

A CCTV system can help document incidents, but it cannot guarantee that a property will be crime-free. This guide compares installation requirements and buying criteria, not unverified provider rankings or fixed market prices.

1. Start with a site survey, not a package advertisement

An installer should ask about the layout, lighting, entry points, wiring distance and purpose of the system. A shop counter, apartment entrance and outdoor warehouse need different equipment and placement.

Ask for a simple drawing showing each proposed camera, its field of view, cable route and recording equipment. If a seller recommends a large package without inspecting the site or asking what you need to monitor, request an explanation.

2. Compare like-for-like written quotations

A fair comparison includes the camera model, recorder, hard drive or storage plan, cables, switches, mounting, installation, tax, warranty and support. A quote for four cameras is not automatically comparable with another four-camera quote.

We have not published a fixed Nepal-wide installation price because quotes depend heavily on equipment, installation complexity and support.

3. Protect privacy when placing cameras

Nepal's Privacy Act, 2075 establishes legal protections for personal privacy. CCTV placement and recording can affect the privacy of employees, visitors, neighbours and customers. Seek appropriate legal advice for workplace or sensitive-location installations.

Practical safeguards include clear notice where surveillance is used, avoiding private spaces, limiting unnecessary capture of neighbouring property, controlling who can view recordings and setting a documented retention policy. Do not share footage casually on social media. A visible camera is not permission to record or disclose everything it sees.

4. Ask who owns the passwords and recordings

The customer should understand who administers the system after handover. Change default credentials, use strong unique passwords, enable supported security features and remove installer access that is no longer needed.

Ask whether the system requires an internet connection for local recording, how remote viewing is secured, whether footage is stored abroad, and how to export recordings for a legitimate purpose. Keep software updated using the manufacturer's trusted process.

5. Test the system before final payment

Do not accept installation as complete until the provider demonstrates day and night images, recording playback, correct timestamps, remote access where requested, and behaviour during power or network interruption.

Request an invoice, warranty card, list of installed serial numbers, storage settings, network details and basic operating instructions. Confirm the support contact and response arrangements in writing.

How to compare actual CCTV providers in Nepal

Ratings Nepal contains listings for providers such as First Aid Nepal, Best CCTV Nepal and Royal Cleaning Service's CCTV offering. These are examples to research, not a ranking or endorsement. Their own websites describe CCTV-related services, but a website claim does not independently establish installer competence, warranty performance or customer satisfaction.

Compare each provider's current written quotation, relevant technical experience and service terms. Check legal business identity where appropriate; our Nepal business verification guide explains how to investigate claims before paying.

Frequently asked questions

How many CCTV cameras does a house need?

There is no universal number. Camera placement depends on entrances, layout, lighting and the areas you lawfully need to monitor. A site survey is more useful than an arbitrary package size.

Can CCTV work without internet?

Some local recording systems can record without a live internet connection, but remote viewing and cloud services may need connectivity. Confirm the behaviour of the exact model.

How long will CCTV footage be stored?

Retention depends on storage capacity, recording settings, compression, number of cameras and whether continuous or motion-based recording is used. Ask the installer to demonstrate the expected settings rather than promising a fixed number of days without calculation.

Is it acceptable to record neighbours or employees?

Surveillance can raise privacy and legal issues. Limit unnecessary recording, provide appropriate notice and obtain legal advice when required. Avoid cameras in private spaces.

Should I buy the cheapest CCTV package?

Not automatically. Compare equipment authenticity, installation quality, security, storage, after-sales service and written warranty alongside total cost.
